Toward a Jewish Liberation Theology for Men, Women and Everybody Else
(This class is open to all CBST members and to the general public)
In Jewish sacred texts there are at least six different genders. In this class we will explore these texts and ask a number of questions: What are the spiritual implications of expanding our understandings of sex and gender in Judaism? How can Jewish sacred texts help us create vibrant modern communities that welcome transgender, gender non-conforming and intersex people? And, finally, what are the theological implications of these texts for people of all genders?
Trans “Tachklis” (practicalities)
(This session is open to all transgender, intersex, gender queer, gender nonconforming people and our allies who would like to be involved with gender issues at CBST)
This session will use the previous week’s class as a spring-board for visioning the next steps the community wants to take to become even more supportive of gender diversity. Topics covered will include: education, outreach, pastoral support and spiritual direction, ritual/liturgy, institutional policies and political action. This will be a working session with concrete action steps.

Just an additional plug – I attended this course at CBST last year when Reuben Zellman taught it, and the class was fascinating. Our rabbis have been asking (and trying to answer) questions about gender for thousands of years, and this is a great opportunity to learn about the writings that specifically detail how people of every gender should be included and welcomed in the Jewish community. I highly recommend it!
