This girl wasn’t even raised with a black identity!! She found out through her mother’s secrets that she was black after 18 years? She shouldn’t be writing a film on being a black jew, because she couldn’t be whiter!! And then she has the nerve to consider herself a black woman….it’s an insult to us jews everywhere.

I’m not following you Jessie. Why is this an insult? And why can’t someone write about the often too true experience of how identity is shaped in nonlinear and complicated ways?
Why wouldn’t we commend someone for taking the risk to talk about her struggle to understand and make sense of her own identity? Are there not lessons for all of us to learn in that story? In fact, aren’t so many of our stories about how we come to understand who we are, as individuals and communities?

Jessie must be mad at something else or somebody else. Sorry Lacey took the punch!
