i would suggest, however, that the need for separate jewish protests is not nearly as strong as the need for jewish participation in community-wide demonstrations.

new yorkers can join me and many other jews in working with Adalah-NY the coalition for justice in the middle east that formed during the 2006 israeli war on lebanon.

also, i'd love to live to see the day when progressive jewish organizations can actually get their views described by jews who're a hair to their right. it's sad to see liberal jews use on those to their left exactly the rhetoric and tactics that they condemn when the jewish right targets them.

that said, there are some significant differences across the spectrum of progressive jewish work in the u.s. on palestine and israel, from American Friends of Peace Now to Meretz USA to Tikkun to the Shalom Center to Brit Tzedek v'Shalom to Jewish Voices for Peace to Jews Against the Occupation-NYC to the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network to
the informal jewish anarchist networks.

everyone i just namechecked has a website that clearly states their positions. but since JVP was just attacked, i want to point out that it differs from Rabbi Waskow's Shalom Center and Rabbi Lerner's Tikkun organizations in only a few ways:

- it is open to the actual diversity of jewish opinion on israel and palestine, rather than insisting on limiting conversation to a pro-israel-before-all-else framework;

- it does not try to impose a particular long-term solution on israelis and palestinians, trusting them to devise the one which will work best, limited only by the demands of international law and human rights;

- it is not primarily a religiously motivated organization;

- it has an open and democratic structure, rather than being centered on one charismatic leader.

I agree, Adam. What is happening in Gaza is disproportionate and shameful. For those who want to join a Jewish protest, there are a range of political options, from the Shalom Center and Tikkun (pro-Israel, pro-two-state-solution, anti-Gaza bombing) to Jewish Voice for Peace (more angry at Israel). I am hoping to post some thoughtful analysis on Zeek soon.
