all of the journalistic words have been, are being, said already.

to me, there’s only one thing worth saying on the journalistic side:
24 israelis have been killed by rocket or mortar attacks from gaza, ever.
more than 300 palestinians have been killed by the israeli blitzkrieg in gaza in the past 2 days.
more than 3,300 palestinians have been killed by the israeli military in gaza since 2000.
and it needs to be said over and over and over again.

beyond the journalistic. words aren’t worth much, or are everything.

UPDATE: Josh Berer has a detailed first-hand account. Photos added below credited to Berer. Folks on the ground report that on Thursday morning, two policemen arrived at the mosque in Wadi el Na’am, signaling the beginning of the demolition. Mahmoud, who received the orders from the Israeli government about the mosque demolition, negotiated with the […]

Dear Readers: Last night I received a message from Devorah Brous, an internationally-renowned speaker on the Negev, Israeli Bedouins and greenwashing, and founder of BUSTAN, an NGO that works in the Bedouin and Jewish communities of the Negev. I met Devorah this summer, and she hooked me up with the new Director of BUSTAN, Ra’ed […]

Yes we can…end torture

In: Take Action, Torture

The human rights violations committed by the Bush Administration on American detainees around the world are well documented. One of the most enduring legacies of the past eight years has been the use of extreme interrogation techniques on prisoners in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Guantanamo. While many major Jewish organizations are on the record opposing torture, […]

With millions of people across the country receiving the virulently anti-Islam Obsession DVD — from voters in swing states through newspaper distribution, to pretty much every pastor and Rabbi who could be reached through their institutions, it’s time to take a stand. Campbell Brown called it out, and even Colin Powell, who I typically wouldn’t […]

I don’t doubt y’all have been following the mass, unlawful preemptive raids by police happening in St. Paul and Minneapolis to squelch dissent at the Republican National Convention. Early today Amy Goodman, Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar were unlawfully arrested. More info below, including numbers to call to demand their release. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE […]

Oy, the false ads attacking Obama are making their claim on the airwaves. Wanna do something about it? Here are two ways you can — they’re not the most sexy or wild, but damn if they don’t have an impact. Donate to MoveOn to help them run this ad condemning McCain for running false attack […]

The August 18-25 issue of The Nation, which will hit bookstores and the occasional newsstand this weekend, includes an Open Letter to Barack Obama, calling on him to stand firm to the principles he so compellingly articulated during his campaign. The letter will be delivered to the Obama campaign in advance of the Democratic convention. […]

[Update: I’ve now gotten confirmation from bloggers, and two large news sites that checked their Google Analytics accounts, and had the same thing happen when they clicked on Palestinian Territories.] This past week, I’ve been reviewing the features of Google Analytics, attempting to get a better sense of you, our readers. Google Analytics gives a […]

A Dream Deferred

In: Immigration, JVoices, Take Action, Youth

This video speaks for itself, riffing off of Langston Hughes’ poem, “A Dream Deferred.” Many of us have friends, classmates, former classmates and family members who know all too well how U.S. policies around immigration are failing the future of our country, and so many young people. Add your name to the pledge that Obama, […]
